"Okadaiseki remains" is the biggest remains in Japan!? Giant settlements of the Jomon period
At the foot of OKADA-HAITSU apartment houses was a village where many people lived in the Jomon period. What would you think if you knew that it was the biggest Jomon village in Japan?
Excavation and research began in 1982, when the prefectural Okada housing complex was rebuilt, and continued for a total of 8 years until 1989. As a result, a huge settlement site from the middle of the Jomon period (About 4,000 to 5,000 years ago) was discovered. In fact, more than 500 houses were identified.
However, the confirmed remains of 500 dwellings range from 1/2 to 1/3 of the total, and the total number of dwellings can be estimated to be from 1,000 to 1,500, making it one of the largest sites of Jomon period dwellings in Japan.
Besides dwellings, burial pits that seemed to be graves, such as a pit (Boko) (a hole drilled in a circle or ellipse) and a burial pot (an earthen pot) were also found. A lot of earthenware and stone tools were found in the ruins, as well as tools used for hunting such as arrowheads, and stone weights and earth weights that are thought to have been used for catching fish.
Also, the site of residence and square surrounding ditch tomb in the late Yayoi period (Around the 3 to 4 century) have been confirmed from the same ruins.
Currently, these pottery, stone tools and replicas of houses can be seen at the Samukawa Cultural Heritage Learning Center ( in Ichinomiya Elementary School).
